Woman sentenced for defrauding her employer of over R10m

The women paid subcontractors' money into her own account.

Elizabeth Magdalena van der Westhuizen of Elspark was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years, at the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on September 2.

She was found guilty of fraud after defrauding her employer, Abbeydale and Civils, of over R10m.

The 40-year-old was placed under correctional supervision, which comes with stern conditions, such as house arrest, community service and refraining from using alcohol or drugs. She must also pay back her employer R179 425.59 monthly from October 31 until her debt of R10 785 425.82 is paid off.

Van der Westhuizen pleaded guilty and was found guilty of fraud on August 25.

She defrauded her employer of millions between February 1, 2018, and May 3, last year.

She took retention money supposed to be paid out to subcontractors by paying the money into her account instead.

Magistrate Ramupfhufhi presided and prosecutor Fyfe represented the State.
