Van Ryn Deep: Four arrested for stealing, selling parts

The first suspect led police to another two alleged accomplices.

Three suspects were recently nabbed by the EMPD in connection with the theft of vehicle parts from the Van Ryn Deep vehicle pound.

Officers from the EMPD Bronberg Precinct visited the pound on February 3, following a tip-off, and found a Nigerian man fitting the description an informant had provided in possession of suspected stolen motor vehicle parts.

EMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Kelebogile Thepa said the man was interrogated about jumping the fence into the vehicle pound and then confessed to having stolen items.

“These included parts like taillights, headlights, wheel caps and wiring mechanisms from various brands of cars.

He also showed the officers a fence which had been cut for entry,” she said.

The recovered vehicle parts are estimated to be worth R15 000.

The man was arrested and later told police where he was selling the parts. This led to the arrest of another two Nigerian males on February 6 by police and EMPD officers as accomplices to the theft.

According to Thepa, officers were led to a tyre shop on Harpur Avenue where the first accomplice was arrested.

The second accomplice was found at the Benoni Plaza.
