Officers from the EMPD Community Liaison Unit (CLU) arrested a 52-year-old man suspected to be in possession of an unlicenced firearm at around 19:00 at Sotho Hostel, Vosloorus, on October 20.
The EMPD spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa, said members of the CLU were tipped-off by concerned community members about a man firing shots along Barry Marais Road while driving a silver-grey Toyota Avanza without a number plate.

“The suspect drove to Sotho Hostel and the police officers followed. As they entered the hostel they came across a vehicle matching the description.
“The officers approached. The suspect was standing next to the vehicle and they requested to search him and the vehicle, to which he agreed,” explained Thepa.

“Officers discovered a black 9mm Girsan pistol with nine live rounds of ammunition in the waistband of the suspect’s pants. He said he doesn’t have a licence for the firearm. The serial number was filed off.”
He was arrested and taken to the Vosloorus Police Station and a case of possession of an unlicenced firearm and ammunition was opened.
Further investigations are underway to establish if the firearm was used in other crimes.
