Manhunt launched for Boksburg ‘CIT heist’ suspects

Occupants of the cash vehicle and an escort vehicle sustained injuries.

Gauteng police have launched a manhunt for a gang of about 12 armed robbers following a cash-in-transit (CIT) heist, on the R21 near the Griffiths off-ramp, on December 9.

National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe urged the public to be on the lookout for the suspects’ getaway vehicles, a white BMW X5 (registration HY 55 HF GP) and a silver BMW X2 (registration KN 47 KK GP).

Mathe pointed out that police in Gauteng have since mobilised maximum resources to trace and apprehend the heavily armed suspects, who bombed the CIT van and apparently ‘stole an undisclosed amount of money’.

However, the Boksburg North police told the Boksburg Advertiser that it was an attempted cash-in-transit robbery.

According to Boksburg North SAPS station commander Colonel Mack Mngomezulu, the suspects, who were in a Toyota Cruiser and Mercedes Benz, rammed the cash van and an escort vehicle while driving along the highway at about 10:00.

He said the occupants of both rammed vehicles sustained injuries. Mngomezulu could not confirm the seriousness of the injuries.

Mngomezulu added that after ramming the vehicles, the suspects attempted to blow up the CIT vehicle. However, they were unsuccessful. “They then randomly fired shots and escaped in two BMWs,” said Mngomezulu.

No other injuries were reported.

Anybody with information may call the Boksburg North police station on 011 960 0100 or the helpline which is 08600 10111.
