Police seek information about drive-by shooting of municipal worker

Anyone who has information may contact the investigating officer.

Police in Boksburg are still searching for a gunman who shot an on-duty municipal worker in a hit-style attack next to the Boksburg Bowling Club in Commissioner Street, on February 9.

The 28-year-old victim, whose name has not yet been released, was certified dead on the scene and his body was taken to a local state mortuary.

While authorities provided only sketchy details of the drive-by shooting, Boksburg Advertiser has learnt that the shooter pulled over alongside the group of workers and then, in broad daylight, pumped more than 10 bullets into his target – and sped off before the police arrived.

According to Boksburg SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Ntsako Ledwaba, the group of municipal workers, including the deceased, was removing waste and clearing weeds and grass along the stretch of the road, just a stone’s throw from the Boksburg Police Station.
Nobody else was injured, but Ledwaba pointed out that the deceased colleagues were left traumatised.

The motive for the attack has yet to be determined, but police suspect that the deceased was the intended target of what appears to be a pre-mediated act.
While the suspect’s full description has yet to be released, police indicated that their preliminary investigation suggests that the shooter was travelling in a Silver VW Polo.
Anyone who has information should contact the investigating officer Mokoena on 083 866 6271.
