Hefty sentence for Boksburg North cop killers
The officers were ambushed on the corner of Field and Main Reef Road in Lilianton.

The High Court in Johannesburg sentenced Njiki Hlulani Mabuza (31) and Savenore Sihle Ntuli (29) to three life terms each on May 27 for the murder of two Boksburg North police officers – Constables Phillip Kgotso Malahlela (24) and Vusimusi Innocent Batsha (24) – on October 21, 2022, in Lilianton, as well as the murder of CPF member Tommy Masuku in July of the same year.
In addition, both accused were sentenced to a further 59 years’ imprisonment for multiple other offences, including attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of unlicensed firearms, and possession of ammunition.
NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane stated that Mabuza was arrested in Boksburg for possession of an unlicensed firearm, which resulted in a tip-off to Warrant Officer Jonathan Phume.

“The second accused was arrested in Makwakwa after firing at a taxi driver and was found in possession of a stolen police firearm,” she said.
Investigations revealed that the pair was involved in multiple crimes, including the murder of a CPF member in July 2022. The victim was ambushed and shot in an informal settlement after being accused of working with the police.
“Four months after the first murder, the accused ambushed and killed two police officers. The officers were responding to a report about a body at the corner of Field and Main Reef roads when they were shot, and their firearms were stolen,” said Mjonondwane.

Senior State Advocate Zarina Pack emphasised that the murders of the two police officers were premeditated and targeted, occurring during a routine task.
“The court concurred, taking into account the severity of the crimes and their impact on the victims and their families, highlighting the need for justice and accountability,” said Pack.
Boksburg North SAPS station commander Mack Mngomezulu applauded all those involved in ensuring justice was served.
“It was heartbreaking to lose our officers. I also believe this serves as a lesson to anyone contemplating the murder of a police officer,” he said.
