An ongoing sewage spill on land earmarked for development in Villa Liza is apparently thanks to a contractor who disappeared without completing a sewerage installation.
The land is opposite the Ext 4 informal settlement and was rezoned as residential in 2013, according to community leader Kleinbooi Mollo.

“The sewage has been running for years. The first metro contractor supposed to install sewerage and water systems is the one that left the manholes open. This was during the former Ward 45 councillor’s tenure,” he explained.
“A new councillor was appointed as well as a new contractor to continue the work. However, the new contractor was nowhere to be seen for a long time and eventually disappeared. I don’t remember how long ago we saw the contractor working on the project, but it was a very long time ago.”

Mollo said the metro must expedite development in the area because it has become crime-riddled.
Ward 45 Clr Nkululeko Sidu confirmed that the area was allocated for development.
“RDP houses are going to be built here for the relocation of residents of Somalia Park. We share the area with Ward 99. I wasn’t aware of the sewage spill and open manholes, but I have escalated the issue to the relevant council departments,” he concluded.
The Boksburg Advertiser is awaiting comment from the metro.
