Hefty fines, sentence for environmental crime

Citizens are urged to report culprits of illegal dumping to the city.

Think twice before unlawfully disposing of your waste as illegal dumping offenders may now, upon conviction, depending on the magnitude of the transgression, be liable for a R100 000 fine or three-year jail term.

The CoE spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini, explained this comes after the chief magistrate at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court determined and approved the implementation of the admission of guilt fines in terms of Section 57(5) of Criminal Procedure Act, Act 51 of 1977, regarding offences in terms of contraventions of CoE Integrated Waste Management By-Law with effect from March 3, 2025.

He stated any natural or juristic person found illegally dumping waste may be liable to a R10 000 spot fine, and upon conviction, depending on the magnitude of the offence, be liable for a fine not exceeding R100 000 or imprisonment of three years.
The full document of all offences and fines is on the CoE website, or the customer care centres across the city.
Citizens can report culprits of illegal dumping to the city’s call centre at 0860 543 000.
