Local NPO needs assistance to continue empowering children
The centre recently took its beneficiaries to the Mandela House in Soweto as part of celebrating Mandela month
Making sure that vulnerable children get proper care and food, Hope and Harmony Centre, based in Sgodi, Etwatwa, prides itself on making a difference in the community.
The local NPO assists in developing the youth and children to become outstanding and responsible citizens through the programmes that they offer.
Founder of the NPO, Itumeleng Kekana, said the centre supports learners to realise their dreams and potential by providing them with space for expression.
“We started to operate in August last year after seeing how the community neglected young children. The children needed someone to gather them in one space to make sure that they are safe from doing criminal activities,” said Kekana.
The centre offers help to children from Sgodi, Chris Hani, Zwakala, Combisa and Railway by providing them with food parcels since they are coming from vulnerable families who are living with compromised health complications.
“We have a target of 300 children but we have so far reached 150 from the prospective communities. The challenging part of the NPO is the lack of funding, which often hinders us in providing daily meals. We have staff members who are volunteering but not paid.
“We are appealing to the community to assist us with any kinds of donations,” said Kekana.
