Radio is turning 100 – share your radio memories
Radiocracy is inviting residents to share their best radio memories in a 750-word story.
Radiocracy is inviting residents to share their best radio memories in a 750-word story that could be published as part of a book.
According to Advocate Robin Sewlal, chairperson of Radiocracy, the organisation comprises radio, democracy and development.
The international conference of the entity was held in September 2001 in Durban and, since then, it has gained traction in academia as well as provided advice and guidance to the radio sector, especially the community tier, he explained.
“Apart from engaging with individual stations, there has been involvement in a range of symposia, seminars and workshops for the collective benefit of South Africans.
“The concept of the ‘Radiocracy Roundtable’ has gathered sizeable momentum through the years by playing a pivotal role in underpinning the tenets of democracy and development.
“Radiocracy will be playing an integral role in various initiatives as radio turns 100 years in South Africa in 2023.”
With regard to the My Radio Memory project, Sewlal said members of the public can be part of this marvellous milestone by sharing their most memorable relationship with radio.
“We are looking for 750-word story from entrants about the benefit/value/friendship that this ‘theatre of the mind’ medium has brought to them.
“Entrants have the freedom and flexibility to choose whatever radio memory is near and dear to them. Get nostalgic and reminisce about radio!”
Sewlal said radio is an intimate, charming medium. It provides companionship, and powerfully activates one’s imagination.
“There is real cause for celebration in 2023 when radio broadcasting in South Africa will be turning 100!
“Memories submitted about the beauty of radio will be considered for a book as part of the celebrations on the century of radio in the country,” he said.
If you have a special radio memory to share, send your 750-word essay and your full contact details to radiocracy@hotmail.com.
The closing date is October 28.
