Lakeside Primary School wins big at e-waste competion
The competition ran from August 1 to September 30. Collections took place weekly from the participating schools.
Lakeside Primary School recently won R30 000 and 15 laptops for Drommedaris Primary School, in the East Rand Mall and Recycle X’s e-waste school competition.
According to Fradene Smith, marketing manager at East Rand Mall, the campaign was aimed at giving back to the community in light of the mall’s 30th birthday.
“We were approached by Recycle X, which does e-waste recycling, and thought why not run a school competition to collect e-waste with the surrounding schools,” she explained.
The competition ran from August 1 to September 30. Collections took place weekly from the participating schools and were promoted on Facebook.
Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen, Boksburg High School, Voortrekker High School, Van Dyk Park Primary School, Summerfields Primary School, Woodlands International College, Lakeside Primary School, Christian Brother’s College and Witdeep Primary School participated.
The results are as follows:
First: Lakeside Primary School (6 603kg of e-waste). The school won R30 000 and East Rand Mall provided them with a list of disadvantaged schools in the East Rand to choose a school of their choice to receive 15 laptops to help uplift the learners.
Second: Summerfield Primary School (2 557kg). The school won R15 000.
Third: Van Dyk Park Primary School (1 170kg). The school won R7 500.
Lakeside Primary School principal Craig Jansen thanked ERM and Recycle X for inviting them to take part in this initiative.
“The school is over the moon about winning the competition. We’re proud of everybody who contributed to the school’s success in this competition. The prize money will come in handy,” he said.
The funds will go towards the school’s workbook initiative.
