The suspects managed to get away, however, the officers recovered illegal firearms and ammunition.

Members from the Boksburg North SAPS recovered illegal firearms and ammunition during a station operation Okae Molao (where is the law?) in a veld on the corner of Main Reef and Rondebult roads on the morning of December 2.

The recovery was made by Warrant Officer Jaco van der Mescht and Sergeant Heinreich Bester, assisted by local security companies and Boksburg North CPF members.

According to Boksburg North SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Justice Ramaube, during the operation, suspected illegal miners opened fire on the law enforcement officers while fleeing into dug tunnels in the veld.

The officers followed them but the miners managed to escape.

However, a 9mm, pistol, a .22 pistol and 176 9mm rounds were recovered. Items such as cellphones, a box of cigarettes and a toothbrush were also found.

Boksburg North SAPS station commander Colonel Mack Mngomezulu commended the officers for recovering the firearms and ammunition.
