Support pledged to families at healing service

The Gauteng Department of Health held a healing service on January 10 for the 12 healthcare workers who died following the tragic gas tanker truck explosion on Christmas Eve.

MEC for Health and Wellness Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, who addressed the attendees, said they are grieving with the families.

“We need to value the work that was done by these 12 healthcare workers. They pursued greatness in their careers. Although the families’ futures may seem bleak without their loved ones, we hope the world will bring gratitude to them,” said Ralehoko.

Chairperson of the Tambo Memorial Hospital board Mosema Mmotla commended the healthcare workers for their dedication.

“No amount of condolences will ease your pain and sorrow, but be comforted from this day. I hope you will be surrounded by peace and love. The hospital has lost dedicated staff,” said Mmotla.

Ahmed Bham of the Gift of the Givers Foundation, said to lose healthcare workers is a tragedy.
“Healthcare workers are the backbone of our country, as was proven during the Covid-19 pandemic. They were at the forefront of providing medical help where needed. Our foundation will continue to support the families of the deceased,” said Bham.

Chaplain Conrad Jantjes described the disaster as that of a magnitude he has never seen before.

“I encourage the families to be strong in these hard times. I hope the families will welcome joy and happiness in their lives in the future,” he said.
