Leon Ferreira fireman hangs up his boots

The fire station will miss the crew commander’s focus behind the wheel and experience.

After 27 years, the DEMS crew commander, Ntobeko Batakati (49), hung up his boots for the last time at the Leon Ferreira Fire Station on May 31.

This came about because the Windmill Park resident is relocating to the Eastern Cape.

His career started after the 1994 elections when the South African Red Cross Society (SARC) recruited him.

A year later, Batakati became a volunteer firefighter at the Boksburg Fire Station. In February 1996, he became a junior firefighter and two years later, he was moved to the Leon Ferreira Fire Station and promoted to crew commander in 2006.

Batakati explained that joining the SARC made him realise his passion for making a difference in the community.
“This is when I found my calling. I just wanted to wear the helmet, and I did,” he added.

The top firefighter elaborated on the one call-out that will stick with him – a car accident just after the Atlas Road bridge a few years ago.

“A man was struck by a small vehicle and lost his head, which we had to look for. It was horrific. I can still picture it today.”

He said dealing with these incidents was difficult, but talking about it was how they got through it.
“You say how you feel, and, at times, you get professional help.”

He said the highlight of his career was the excitement of responding to calls, knowing he would be helping people.

“Another highlight was getting to work knowing you would meet with your colleagues and have a blast. When you were there, you were with your family. It’s a home away from home.

“This is why I’m sad about leaving. I’m going to miss my colleagues.

“The lows of my career include knocking off at 20:00 because of a shortage of vehicles,” the father of four added.
He worked with many greats, such as Collin Deiner, Mhlengi Makhubalo and Bennie Nel (his supervisor).

He advised the younger generation: “If you want to be a fireman, you must have the nerve. It is not a job for sissies. You must be able to bend your back. However, if you follow instructions, it will go smoothly.”

The DEMS spokesperson, William Ntladi, said losing a member of Batakati’s calibre and experience was sad.

“He is one of the great guys. His focus behind the wheel is spectacular. You could always count on him when it came to driving heavy-duty vehicles.

“We wish him all the best for the future.”

Nel said it was a pleasure to work with him for 27 years.

Batakati enjoyed a braai at the fire station with his colleagues on May 26. He did not divulge information about his plans.
