Mercy Haven holds Thanksgiving ceremony

The women's league members were honoured for their good deeds.

Mercy Haven held a mass Thanksgiving ceremony on July 18 to honour The Portuguese Women’s League that donated R27 800 to renovate the House of Clare.

According to the centre manager of Mercy Haven, Maria Pereira, the house will be used to shelter victims of gender-based violence.

“The renovations started in June and ended on the second week of July. The House of Clare has always been an integral part of the shelter since it opened in 2018,” she explained.

Pereira said she is glad that the House of Clare was finally renovated because it will help with the operational processes of the shelter.

“Now that the house is renovated the women will have a comfortable place to live in. All this wouldn’t be possible without the help of the Women’s League.”

Mimi Jardim, a member of the Women’s League, said they saw it necessary to help the shelter.

“Our help won’t end here. We want to use the kitchen to impart cooking skills to the women at the shelter. We believe it is important to impart survival basic skills to the women so that whenever they leave the shelter, they will be ready to survive outside of it,” she explained.
