Benonian Rita Sprenzel will attempt to summit Africa’s highest point, Mount Kilimanjaro, when she begins her trek on August 26.

“I’m ready to push myself, embrace discomfort and tap into the reservoirs of my strengths,” she said.

Sprenzel said this challenge would not only challenge her physically but it also represents a personal triumph over adversity.

She sustained a knee injury 18 years ago while on holiday in Ballito after a surfer ploughed into her legs, causing her left knee to snap backwards.

Rita Sprenzel will begin her Kilimanjaro journey on August 26.

For years, she experienced debilitating pain in her knee. She recently had a successful knee replacement, which, she said, has given her a new lease on life.

“The Kilimanjaro challenge was a bucket list item of mine that I never thought I would ever accomplish. Now, it’s only days away,” she said.

She began preparing for this adventure over a year ago with some rigorous training that included physical training and many kilometres of walking and hiking in Suikerbosrand, Modderfontein and Groenkloof in Pretoria.

“I’ve read stories on how others conquered Kilimanjaro to keep myself motivated.”

Rita Sprenzel has been preparing for this adventure since last year.

While this journey will test Sprenzel’s mental and physical endurance and would be a huge achievement if she reaches the summit, she will also use this for a greater purpose.

“I’m using my climb to raise funds for the Apricot Tree. I have partnered with this amazing facility and reputable NPO dedicated to assisting and catering for the needs of learners aged three to 25 years, who have intellectual, physical and developmental disabilities,” she said.

“The Apricot Tree is very close to my heart. I have closely witnessed the impact this organisation and dedicated facilitators have made on the lives of special needs children. I am determined to make a difference.”

Rita Sprenzel will use her adventure to raise funds for the Apricot Tree.

She is asking the residents for a donation of any kind to help her achieve her goal to raise funds for the Northmead-based NPO.

“Together we can make a real difference in the lives of these individuals. If you would like to assist in making a difference, the Apricot Tree and I will be most appreciative.”

Sprenzel will be joined on this expedition by three other local residents, who will all work together to try and make it atop Africa’s highest altitude, standing at 5 895 above sea level.
