50 years and still in love

Nico and Christine Prinsloo are pensioners who enjoy spending time together and have done so for 50 years.

Nico (69) and Christine Prinsloo (64) celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on October 5.

They said their undying love for one another was the secret to such a long and happy marriage.

They met at the East Rand Proprietary Mines (ERPM) quarters, where both their parents worked.

According to Nico, they have had their ups and downs, but nothing ever caused them to part ways.

“After we were married in 1973, I drank excessively, affecting our relationship. I could see how my problem affected my family, and I quit drinking. Back then, we were already expecting a son,” Nico said.

“When I was younger, I used to be jealous when I saw other men around my wife, but as the years passed, I learnt to control it. I learnt a lot about myself from living with my wife,” he shared.

Christine said communication played a pivotal role in their relationship.

“We also ensured we didn’t go to bed angry at each other. We made it our responsibility to iron out our issues,” Christine expressed.

The couple has lived in Witkoppie Ridge since 1980.

“I’m happy we have been together this long. Many couples divorce, so for us to have stayed together this long is a milestone. We are going to celebrate our anniversary by going out on a date, sleeping at a hotel, and getting new wedding rings,” she said.

Nico and Christine, who have four grandchildren, advised young couples to communicate more and ensure they sort out problems arising in their relationships.
