Pet care tips for Diwali

Read on to see how you can keep your pets safe from fireworks.

The Boksburg SPCA has shared tips and information to keep pets safe during Diwali, celebrated on November 12 this year.

Diwali is an Indian festival of lights, usually lasting five days and celebrated during the Hindu lunisolar month, Kartika.

This celebration can be great fun for people, but light, noise and colour can be frightening and chaotic for pets.

Boksburg SPCA manager Vicky Finnemore said being prepared for the celebrations may save or prevent the loss of a pet’s life.

The manager provided these tips for keeping pets safe:
▪︎ Microchip your pet – you can do this at the Boksburg SPCA for R250 or buy an instant tag for R60 to attach to their collar.
▪︎ Make sure you have a recent, clear photo of your pet/s on your phone.
▪︎ Visit your vet and discuss medication or calming options.
▪︎ Bring all your pets (including cats) inside ahead of time and ensure all windows are closed and there are no escape routes.
▪︎ Close curtains and play music to mask the sound of fireworks.
▪︎ If you have outside animals like chickens, aviaries, or rabbits, partly cover their enclosure and include extra bedding so they can burrow and hide.
▪︎ If possible, stay home and comfort your pet.
Should your pet get injured, these veterinary practices offer after-hour services:

Finnemore further said should your pet get lost, immediately contact all local SPCAs and veterinary practices. “Post a photo of your pet on social media pages with your pet’s details, gender, area lost and your contact details.”

The manager further warned the public that harming an animal or pet with fireworks would result in prosecution.

“Should you witness cruelty, please call your local SPCA’s emergency number.”

The Boksburg SPCA on-duty staff will be available to help receive stray or injured animals.
