Operation Prosper targets illegal mining hotspots
Police seized explosives and arrested a number of suspects during Operation Prosper, which targeted illegal mining and related criminal activities.
Police have intensified the crackdown on illegal mining in Benoni, with Operation Prosper teams conducting raids in identified hotspots as part of a wider Gauteng operation.
The operations were carried out in Benoni and Van Ryn, as well as the Primrose/Makause informal settlement in Ekurhuleni, between August 8 and August 13.

The Benoni operations formed part of a broader multidisciplinary crackdown that saw more than 40 suspects arrested across the Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg and Sedibeng districts.
The suspects were arrested for offences including illegal immigration and the unlawful possession of explosives.

Police also seized various items believed to be linked to illegal mining activities, including water pumps, spades, phendukas, gas bottles, generators and explosives.
Operation Prosper involves the SAPS, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and other relevant stakeholders. The operation aims to disrupt illegal mining and associated criminal activities.
