Outcry over clogged council manhole inside spaza shop

Residents have raised concerns over a sewerage manhole inside a spaza shop in East Central Street near the corner of Maeba and Mphago streets in Windmill Park Ext 19.

Residents, who spoke to Boksburg Advertiser anonymously, said the health concern came to light after the area was plagued by a sewage spill for days.
Subsequent investigations into the cause of the mess led municipal workers to the address where they discovered a blocked drain inside the spaza shop, that appears to be illegally built over the city’s sewer line.

Shocked residents took to their community WhatsApp groups where they raised their health concerns, with others threatening to take matters into their own hands.
One of the residents said as a mother she is very concerned about the health of unsuspecting children who purchase food items from the shop.

Now, they are calling on the metro to intervene by closing the spaza shop and instructing the property owner to demolish the section of the structure they believe was built without municipal approval.
The metro has not yet responded to our request for comment on the issue.
