Events must have Sasrea approval, warns metro

Applications to host events must be submitted to the Sasrea Committee,

The CoE urges event organisers, companies and individuals planning to host sports or recreational events to abide by the rules and safety regulations of the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act (Sasrea), Act 2 of 2010.

According to the city, applications to host events must be submitted to the Sasrea Committee, which presides over all applications for events, 21 days before the event to give the committee enough time to consider all aspects of the gathering.

However, in extraordinary and reasonable circumstances, the Act allows an event to be approved at least 14 days before it happens.

“The Sasrea Committee is made up of members from different departments. These officials’ duty is to evaluate the application for compliance based on their expertise and departmental regulations,” said municipal spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

Dlamini added, “One of the key elements of the committee becomes the safety of the public before, during and after the event. As a city, we are responsible for protecting the community and remain steadfast in our efforts to achieve this.”

The spokesperson said if the application meets all the Act’s requirements, it receives a permit to proceed. If not, it is not approved, and the organiser receives the reasons for such.

“It is important to note that if an application was not submitted and jointly evaluated by the Sasrea Committee, a permit will not be issued under any circumstances.

“The city wishes to make it clear that any event held outside the Sasrea is illegal, and the organisers risk criminal charges for hosting an illegal event,” he said.

Download application forms from the city’s website on www.ekurhuleni.gov.za or request them from sasrea@ekurhuleni.gov.za, lerato.lebeko@ekurhuleni.gov.za or shadi.tsebe@ekurhuleni.gov.za
