Boksburg parolees clean up around SPCA

The clean-up forms part of the Boksurg parolees' community service.

A handful of people, who were once on the wrong side of the law, spent February 6 cleaning up around the Boksburg SPCA.

The clean-up forms part of the Boksurg parolees’ community service to prove they are rehabilitated and ready to be reintegrated into the community.

From 08:00, the parolees were at the SPCA ready with black bags and gardening tools to pick up litter and cut the grass around the society’s pound house, where its staff members live. The area outside the SPCA was also cleaned.

The parolees, who were convicted for different crimes such as robbery, were monitored by Boksburg Correctional Services community liaison officer Alice Dhlamini.

Representatives from the Benoni-based NPC Etwatwa Greening team assisted the parolees with the clean-up.

Chairperson of the Etwatwa Greening team Vusi Matladi said that they are working hand-in-hand with stakeholders such as the Ekurhuleni Environmental Resources and Waste Management.

One of the parolees, who wished to remain anonymous, said he has been out on parole for about four months now. He was convicted of robbery.

“I learned from my mistakes. Finding a job is a challenge. It’s a struggle to get by without an income. We also have families to feed,” he said.

Boksburg SPCA manager Vicky Finnemore said the society is overjoyed about the clean-up.

“It’s great that they are assisting us,” added Finnemore.
