Former teacher now nurturing four-legged friends
She took a leap of faith in January when she resigned to apply for a receptionist post at the Benoni SPCA.
After years of working as a school teacher, Delia Smit of Fairleads traded her profession to work with animals.
Delia, a trainee inspector at the Benoni SPCA, previously worked at Laerskool Witfield as a foundation phase teacher for about 10 years.
She took a leap of faith in January when she resigned to apply for a receptionist post at the Benoni SPCA.
“I just needed a break, and when I saw this post, I decided to apply,” Delia explained.
“When I came for the interview, the unexpected happened. The committee and the manager decided to appoint me instead as a trainee inspector. Due to my teaching background, they thought I could add value in this position.”
She said she could never have imagined doing anything else than teaching until she started working for the SPCA.
“This place feels like home. I’m enjoying every moment.”
Her family supported her decision to switch careers.
The Fairleads resident is also a pet mom to a one-year-old Boston terrier, a two-year-old rottweiler, and a five-month-old bull terrier.
