Police officers involved in collision recovering

Nobody was seriously injured in the accident.

Police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving following a collision between a Boksburg North SAPS patrol van and a small car on the corner of Ravenswood and Trichardts roads on April 18.

According to Boksburg North SAPS station commander Colonel Mack Mngomezulu, nobody has been charged as yet as investigations are still ongoing.

Mngomezulu explained the officers were on the way to work at an event at the Birchwood Hotel & OR Tambo Conference Centre when the accident happened.

The station commander said the officers are recovering well.

When the Boksburg Advertiser arrived at the scene, the traffic was backed up, the police van was on its side in the middle of the intersection, and there was damage to the front of the other car involved, a maroon Daewoo Cielo.

The maroon Daewoo Cielo was written off in the accident.

The driver of the Daewoo, Andries Viljoen, was still at the scene. He told the Advertiser his arm was hurt and numb, but he was otherwise ‘okay’.

Viljoen explained that he was on his way to work in Benoni when the accident happened.

“I was driving on Ravenswood Road and wanted to continue straight past Trichards Road. The traffic light was green for me. The police van was on Trichardts Road, in the right turning lane. They, however, did not turn and continued straight. That is when I hit them.

“I got out of my car to find out if the officers were okay. There was a male and a female officer in the van.”

His car was written off.
