35 shacks razed by fire in Delmore informal settlement

No injuries have been reported.

Multiple people have been left displaced due to a fire that destroyed over 35 shacks at the Delmore informal settlement on the evening of April 24.

According to DEMS spokesperson, William Ntladi, a call about the fire was received via the call centre.

“Primary responding crews from both Boksburg and Germiston Central Fire Stations were dispatched at 19:29 and arrived on the scene at 19:34.

“The crews took over from desperate residents who were found using the bucket brigade firefighting method in an attempt to extinguish the raging blaze.”

Ntladi said three fire engines augmented by 14 firefighters managed to put out the fire and no casualties were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Ntladi added that DEMS officials and community structures are working together to help those affected with disaster relief aid.
