Family heartbroken son (8) must fight cancer again
The family will take things one day at a time.
Angélique and Pierre van Coller from Boksburg are heartbroken that their son, Jandré (eight), has again been diagnosed with cancer.
Five years ago, the brave boy fought cancer after being diagnosed with early precursor acute lymphoblastic leukaemia at the age of three.
Doctors in London suggested he be treated with two types of chemo, peg laspar and nelerabrine.
The treatment worked, and Jandré was in remission after a few months.
He then underwent a successful bone marrow transplant on October 30, 2019, and has remained healthy until recently.
Angélique said her son was diagnosed with early precursor t-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia earlier this month and is already receiving treatment.
The mother said the boy is doing well so far, but they suspect the effects of his chemotherapy treatment will start showing soon.
“Jandré’s been receiving vincristine, mitoxantrone and laspar chemotherapy. The doctors are doing everything they can to get him into remission within the first month.
“Our doctor is working closely with a doctor from London again to ensure she does everything possible to give Jandré his best chance at beating this thing a second time.
“He’s also getting two different medications to reduce nausea and vomiting. So far, he is taking it well. He had two blood transfusions and numerous platelet transfusions, and it seems he has finally stabilised,” said Angélique, adding that Jandré will go for another bone marrow transfer once in remission.
“My heart aches for what he needs to endure again on this second journey,” she said.
Fighting spirit
Angélique said they would take one day at a time and focus on and nurture only the positive news.
“We refuse to believe he will struggle to regain remission. God is greater than any medical prognosis or expectation. Instead, we celebrate the fact that the leukaemia has not spread to his spinal fluid or testes.
“We celebrate that the leukaemia is isolated to his bone marrow only, and we celebrate that Jandré is still a fighting spirit who will not take this fight lying down.
“We also celebrate having a wonderful doctor who goes above and beyond to give Jandré his best fighting chance. We celebrate already having such a great army of prayer warriors interceding on our behalf. We need only trust.”
