#MandelaMonth: Transform a child’s life through virtual giving
Each Virtual Santa Shoebox contains essential items like toothbrushes, school supplies and clothing vouchers.
The Santa Shoebox Project is embracing online initiatives this Mandela Day, July 18, by encouraging the public to pledge personalised Virtual Santa Shoeboxes.
According to Deb Zelezniak, CEO of the non-profit organisation, advancements in technology have also changed philanthropy, making it more accessible and convenient than ever before.
This initiative aims to bring joy to underprivileged children in remote areas of South Africa, ensuring they receive end-of-year gifts that might otherwise be unavailable due to a lack of local donors.
Zelezniak emphasised that these virtual donations allow individuals to make a significant impact without committing to the full 67-minute Mandela Day tradition, freeing up time for other charitable activities.

Each Virtual Santa Shoebox contains essential items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, facecloths, school supplies, toys, sweets, and clothing vouchers. Additional items such as lunchboxes, school socks, and books are included in cheerfully printed shoeboxes, ensuring each child receives a thoughtful package.
For those unable to assemble a physical box, there is an option to donate funds of any amount, with surplus funds supporting the Santa Shoebox Project’s Legacy initiatives. These initiatives aim to bring lasting improvements to the lives of children benefiting from the project and the impoverished communities they reside in.
Zelezniak highlighted the inclusivity of online giving, noting that virtually anyone can participate in Mandela Day, empowering individuals to directly impact a child’s life and experience the joy of giving.
On July 18, South Africans are encouraged to purchase Virtual Santa Shoeboxes through the Santa Shoebox Project’s website or OneDayOnly, providing an opportunity to contribute to this transformative initiative.
