Letter to the Editor: Typical of the metro to want to cross that bridge when they get to it

Howard Skeens of Sunward Park writes:

The metro’s MMC of Roads and Transport [Andile Mngwevu] gives the lame excuse of bureaucratic hold-ups (euphemism for ingrained incompetence) in rebuilding the bridge on Hospital Road.

This is after nearly two years since the gas tanker explosion. If Prasa had not started rebuilding the railway bridge, we could be guaranteed the metro would continue as usual, doing nothing.

The sinkhole on Rondebult Road occurred how many years ago, and what progress has the metro made on repairs? Is the same excuse applicable? Red tape delaying repairs?

This also falls under roads and transport.

A simple joining of the dots leads to the obvious outcome that this department is non-functional. The MMC is a political appointment with no clue of this complex portfolio. The minions in this department are replicas of many poorly functioning Ekurhuleni departments.

The usual claptrap about consulting and working with Prasa is another euphemism for vacillating and doing nothing. Prasa has been on site for nearly a year. Where was the MMC and his team?

These delays have probably resulted in the doubling of the cost of repairs.

Well done to journalist Fanie Mthupha for being forthright in showing up the metro as dragging its feet – again.
