Scholar transport driver says brake failure caused seven-car crash

The learners were en route from Boksburg and Germiston to Katlehong High School.

Brake failure was the apparent reason a privately owned bus transporting learners to Katlehong High School bus caused an accident involving seven light motor vehicles this morning (January 15).

William Ntladi, the DEMS district manager media liaison, said the learners were en route from Ramaphosa and the Delmore informal settlements in Boksburg and the Dukathole and Makausi informal settlements in Germiston when the bus crashed into the other vehicles on the intersection of Black Reef Road and Kasteel Street, Dinwiddie.

No learners were hurt.

“Swift intervention by the Wadeville Fire Station rescue team helped calm the scores of terrified children. Fortunately, none of them or the occupants of the other vehicles sustained injuries.

“According to the bus driver, the airbrake system failed. The exact number of learners on the bus is unknown.

Another bus from the same company was dispatched to take the learners to school.

“The intersection had to be temporarily closed while officials investigated.”
