Pope John Paul II established World Day of the Sick in 1992 to encourage Catholics to pray for those who are sick and suffering, offering them hope.
The St Francis Care Centre joined the world in commemorating the 33rd annual observance of World Day of the Sick on February 11.
This year’s theme is: ‘Hope does not disappoint but strengthens us in times of trial’.
In her message, centre manager Tilly Brouwer said: “Pope Francis reminds the faithful that physical illness can have emotional and spiritual effects.
“The Holy Father calls for our renewed commitment to caring for the sick with love, compassion, and faith, recognising that hope is a gift that sustains both those who suffer and those who accompany them,” said Brouwer.
“Jesus earnestly calls us to visit and care for the sick, teaching us by example through His solicitude for the sick and His miracles, which freed men and women from sickness. We should all contribute to building a culture of care wherever we live – one that responds to the dignity of each person, from conception to natural death, and offers spiritual support in times of trial,” said Brouwer.
Father Gwanisheni Siphelele officiated a Mass and blessed the patients and staff members.
Brouwer described the event as a success. She said it was well-attended by St Francis’ patients, staff members and stakeholders.
“Everyone at the centre felt very blessed,” said Brouwer.
St Francis Care Centre is a registered NPO catering to dozens of vulnerable children and adults, most of them suffering from threatening and/or life-limiting conditions.
