Sunward Park maths teachers crowned best in Ekurhuleni

The school’s maths department recently received top honours, with three of its educators being recognised as the best mathematics teachers in the Ekurhuleni region and the Ekurhuleni South District.

Sunward Park High School has proven once again why it is fast becoming known as the home of mathematics.

The school’s maths department recently received top honours, with three of its educators being recognised as the best mathematics teachers in the Ekurhuleni region and the Ekurhuleni South District.

The outstanding teachers, Tazvarwa Chivariro, Sinikiwe Martsa, and Terrence Chirambadare, were celebrated for producing the best results in mathematics based on a combination of factors. This included the number of learners who wrote, the distinctions achieved, the overall averages, and pass rates. Moreover, the school has produced consistent distinctions in Maths for the past three years,

Speaking on behalf of the department, Tazvarwa Chivariro credited their success to consistent teamwork and a learner-centred teaching approach.

“When you teach mathematics, it shouldn’t be about you as an individual. It’s about collaboration, identifying learners’ strengths and weaknesses, and tailoring support accordingly.

“We divide responsibilities and share our skills across groups to make sure no learner is left behind.”

Chivariro explained their method of empowering learners to take ownership of their understanding:
“When we teach a topic, we want the learner to understand it better than we do. After classwork or homework, we ask them to take turns explaining the answers to one another. It builds confidence, reinforces learning, and encourages deeper understanding.”

The department also goes the extra mile by helping learners prepare study timetables, starting early with syllabus completion, and dedicating the rest of the year to revision and exam preparation.

“By term two, our syllabus is done. From there, it’s all about sharpening skills and revision. We even hold night study sessions to keep the momentum going.”

Fellow teachers Martsa and Chirambadare echoed this passion and drive, adding that their goal is to compete at the national level next.
“We work with vision and determination. We want to break the myth that Maths is a difficult subject. It’s fun and opens so many career doors,

We’re grateful for our HOD, Chivariro, and our principal, Nadia Walljee, for believing in our vision and supporting us. It all starts with hard work, teamwork, and a clear plan. At Sunward Park, Maths isn’t just a subject, it’s a family effort and a passion.”
