Local ready to hit the road again for mental health awareness
After two years, Martin is once again planning to go to Italy to raise awareness about mental health.
Boksburg’s Martin van der Vyver is preparing to embark on a second overland motorcycle journey from South Africa to Italy for mental health awareness, following an interrupted attempt in 2023.
Van der Vyver, who is well known in Boksburg for his adventurous spirit and public efforts to destigmatise mental health issues, has officially confirmed that March 2026 will mark the start of his next cross-continental ride, a mission he’s calling “unfinished business.”
“We’re officially planning to hit the road again, and this will be a journey across Africa into Europe you won’t want to miss.”
A mission with purpose
The ride is aimed at raising awareness for mental health, an issue Van der Vyver feels strongly about.
“Mental illness isn’t talked about enough. I want people to know it’s okay not to be okay,” he explained.
This new trip is a continuation of the journey he began with his brother, Clinton Delport, in August 2023. The pair set out from Boksburg to ride to Italy. However, just three days into the trip, Delport was injured in a motorbike accident in Namibia and had to return home.
Van der Vyver continued the trip solo, encountering multiple difficulties,

Due to the compounded risks, Van der Vyver made the difficult decision to return to South Africa in early September 2023.
For the upcoming trip, Van der Vyver is adjusting his strategy, including inviting others to join him on the ride.
“It’s not wise to do this kind of journey alone. I’ve already asked friends to consider joining. There’s safety in numbers; this is why I would like as many people as possible to come and join me. Let’s make this the ride of a lifetime, for the cause, the thrill, and the memories,” he said.
He is also calling on the community for support, both logistically and financially, as the journey is expected to take several months and requires substantial resources, from fuel and equipment to accommodation and border fees.
Get involved
Community members who are interested in joining the ride, following the journey, or contributing financially, can get in touch through the official Facebook page: Martin’s Bike Adventure SA – Italy
There is also a WhatsApp group being set up for planning and regular updates.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Whether you’re riding with us, cheering from home, or helping with logistics, we’re in this together,” he said.
