Leave a legacy with a bequest to Boksburg SPCA

By leaving a bequest to the Boksburg SPCA, you can ensure ongoing care for animals while protecting your family and your legacy.

Boksburg SPCA urges residents to consider including the society in their Will in the form of a bequest to help ensure the continued care and protection of animals in need.

Manager Vicky Finnemore explained that having a legally binding Will is not only vital for protecting your loved ones, but also provides an opportunity to reflect on the legacy you wish to leave behind.

“Drawing up a Will protects your family and loved ones, and allows you to let your values live on.
“By including the Boksburg SPCA in your Will, your legacy will touch the lives of countless animals through the vital welfare work we do.”

What is a bequest?
A bequest is a gift, usually to a charity, outlined in your will, and can take several forms:
• A specific sum of money.
• Particular items, such as property, vehicles, jewellery or artwork.
• A percentage of your estate.
• The residue of your estate.
• A life insurance policy.

Finnemore emphasised the importance of clearly specifying the intended beneficiary in your Will.
“If you wish to bequeath something to our branch, it is essential to use the wording: ‘I bequeath to Boksburg SPCA’. If the Will only states ‘SPCA’, the bequest will automatically be allocated to the National Council of SPCAs. ”

About Boksburg SPCA
The Boksburg SPCA is a non-profit organisation that receives no government funding and relies solely on the generosity of the public through donations and bequests to continue its operations.

“We never turn away an animal in need- whether sick, unwanted, or abandoned. Often, we even have to collect them ourselves as owners don’t have transport,” Finnemore added.
The organisation also plays a crucial role in the local community by:
• Responding to all cruelty complaints within its jurisdiction.
• Running outreach programmes in underprivileged areas, which include animal dipping, education, sterilisation campaigns, and subsidised veterinary care.
• Maintaining the Boksburg SPCA’s facilities, vehicles, and staff – all of which come at a significant monthly cost.
“Every donation and bequest, big or small, helps keep our doors open and our services running. Your legacy matters to the Boksburg SPCA – help us continue being the voice for the voiceless.”

Why having a Will matters
Without a valid Will, your estate is distributed according to law, which could result in unintended consequences. These may include:
• Individuals you did not wish to benefit from your estate receiving an inheritance.
• A life partner potentially being left with nothing, particularly in cases where a couple is not legally married.
• Children’s inheritances being placed in the Government Guardian’s Fund or with a court-appointed guardian, instead of in a trust.
• Potential for family disputes over the distribution of assets.
• Delays in the administration of the estate, as it would be handled by the state, often resulting in significant financial and emotional strain for families.
