Bookshop at SPCA helps make a difference for four-legged friends

Looking for affordable reads? Then you have to pay a visit to Thandeka's Bookshop at the Boksburg SPCA.

Thandeka’s Bookshop at the Boksburg SPCA is making a big impact, not only by offering bargain reads, but by helping animals in need.

Run by volunteers, the bookshop offers a wide variety of second-hand books at affordable prices, with novels, non-fiction, sport, gardening, art, music, and children’s books.

On Wednesdays, pensioners pay only R5 for novels, making reading more accessible to everyone. The shop is open Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 12:00, and closed on weekends and public holidays.

All the proceeds go directly to the SPCA.

“It’s not just about selling books, it’s about helping the animals. Reading is knowledge, and this place is educational. It’s also a space where people come and open up about their struggles. It’s more than a shop, it’s a platform for change,” said manager Pearl Thorp of Impala Park.

The bookshop offers a variety of books that are neatly organised.

Named after Thandeka, a black cat of about two years who wandered into the SPCA and never left, the shop carries her spirit.

“She was sterilised, and she just stayed. Thandeka came with a story applicable to what the SPCA is doing. This is why I decided to name the shop after her,” Pearl added.
Passionate about animals and her community, Pearl believes in taking action.

“If you want change, you need to be the change. The more we reach out, the better.”

The bookshop is growing, with over 100 people on a WhatsApp group, some as far as Cape Town, eager to support and find out what’s in stock.
Book donations and volunteers are always welcome.

“People think I’m crazy to do this almost everyday, but it’s a pleasure. I enjoy what I do and we’ve got lovely volunteers. More volunteers are always welcome. Even if it’s just a few hours, come get involved.”
