UPDATE: It may take 4 more days before power is fully restored to affected Boksburg areas
The city's power restoration efforts have already suffered about a four-day delay.
Power outages in Boksburg are set to continue until October 11 following cable theft.
Technicians have identified the cause of the prolonged power outages affecting several Boksburg suburbs and industrial areas, but the city warns that repairs may take several more days due to the severity of the damage and access challenges.
Large parts of Boksburg were plunged into darkness on Friday night, October 3, after thieves stole 132kV cables from a road tunnel under the N12.
Repairs are currently underway, with an estimated completion date of October 11, as technicians face difficult conditions to reach the site.
To reduce the impact on residents, the city has implemented load rotation between 08:00 and 17:00, which will continue until the stolen cables are replaced. The affected areas include Jet Park, Witfield, Comet, Boksburg North, Plantation, and surrounding neighbourhoods.
Metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini told the Boksburg Advertiser that repairs were further delayed by the need to obtain a wayleave from SANRAL before trenching, as the cables were laid on SANRAL’s servitude line.
Customers are advised to treat all electrical networks as live while repair work is ongoing.
