Two dogs rescued after reportedly being abandoned in Sunward Park home
The Boksburg SPCA recently rescued two adult male dogs, a Golden Retriever cross and a Toy Pom, from an abandoned property in Sunward Park after their owners reportedly relocated and left them behind.
According to SPCA inspector Ralph Chivaviro, the SPCA initiated the rescue following a complaint from a concerned member of the public.
Chivaviro said the dogs, estimated to be between one and three years old, were believed to have been without food or water for over a week.
Field officer Tshepo Sithole initially visited the property on October 8, where he found the dogs and left an urgent notice at the gate for the owners to contact him. He also provided food and water for the animals.
When he received no response, Chivaviro approached the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on October 10 to obtain a warrant for the removal of the dogs. Accompanied by Sithole, the SPCA took the dogs into its care. Both dogs were covered in ticks, and the Toy Pom was malnourished.

“They are such friendly dogs. It’s heartbreaking to see that someone would abandon them. It does not seem like there is anybody living on the property. We have yet to hear from the owners.”
He noted that pet abandonment is becoming a growing concern, especially with the approaching festive season.
“We receive many reports of abandoned animals, and it is difficult for us as we must follow procedure before we can rescue the animals. In some cases, the owners later claim they arranged for someone to care for the pets while they were away,” he explained.
Chivaviro urged the public to act responsibly when facing circumstances such as relocation.
“There is no need to abandon your pets. If you cannot care for them, you can surrender them to your local SPCA.”
