SAPS ready to help drug addicts, their families

According to the police, there has been an increase in drug abuse in the Boksburg North policing precinct.

The Boksburg North SAPS Social Crime Prevention Unit urges drug addicts and their families to visit the police station for help in accessing free support.

Warrant Officer Phina Makoetja of the unit said the officers help people to register with Sanca for free.

As part of the process, those seeking help will attend weekly sessions designed to prepare them for formal rehabilitation.

“Drug abuse is increasing and we are trying to minimise it by helping addicts and their families. We will assist those who want to help to go to rehab,” said Makoetja.

She added that many parents felt overwhelmed and unsure of what to do when their children used drugs.

“Some parents don’t know what to do if their kids are using drugs, and we are willing to assist. It’s in the interest of the community.”

Makoetja confirmed that the area has seen a rise in drug abuse, with Mandrax, nyaope and Cat identified as the most commonly used substances.

The SAPS initiative is part of its efforts to deal with crime’s root causes by supporting people affected by substance abuse and strengthening families within the community.

Community members seeking help can visit the Boksburg North Police Station for more information and support or call Makoetja on 082 774 7614 or Const Mamiki Libiyang on 072 633 5423.
