National shutdown spotlights GBV crisis as Reiger Park adds its voice
Reiger Park transformed into a space of remembrance and resistance as community members confronted the painful realities of gender-based violence together.
The G20 women’s shutdown cast a nationwide spotlight on the epidemic of abuse facing women and children.
This spotlight extended into Reiger Park, where residents gathered to echo the country’s urgent call for action.
Community members and stakeholders came in their numbers to gather at the Reiger Park shopping Centre on November 21, where attendees stood in solidarity against gender-based violence (GBV).

Reiger Park’s gathering focused on honouring women whose lives were lost to violence, supporting families still mourning, and confronting the trauma that GBV continues to imprint.

The gathering stood in dignity and reverence, acknowledging that behind every statistic lies a name, a face, a story, and a future that was stolen. The presence of the affected families served as a powerful reminder that GBV is not an abstract issue- it is a lived reality that continues to shape the heart of the community.
This was more than a programme; it was a moment of truth and accountability.
It called on everyone, neighbours, parents, leaders, and protectors, to look inward and recognise that the fight against GBV requires more than words. It demands active participation, compassionate leadership, and a united front that refuses to normalise violence in any form.
One resident, Charlene Taylor, said she supported the event because GBV remains a major issue in the country and continues to affect families throughout the community.
Ward 34 Cle Edith Klassen expressed appreciation for the turnout and unity shown.

“A warm and heartfelt thank you to all schools, individuals, organisations and partners whose support made yesterday’s shutdown successful. It demonstrated the true spirit of Reiger Park. We are united, courageous and committed to building a safer community for all,” she said.
Residents say the message remains clear: while the national shutdown has passed, the urgency of confronting GBV has not. Reiger Park is determined to remain part of the solution.
