16 Days of Activism: Locals reflect on the root causes of GBV
Residents believe poor policing, toxic upbringing and substance abuse are the root causes of gender-based violence.
South Africa has entered the 27th year of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, running from November 25 to December 10 under the theme ‘Letsema: Men, Women, Boys and Girls working together to end GBVF.’
According to the government’s website, this year’s campaign will mark the 27th anniversary of its adoption.

“The campaign has, over the years, raised awareness of the devastating impact that GBVF has on women and children, and the social fabric of our society. It has also been used to highlight the societal and systemic causes of GBVF, and to mobilise action at local, national, and international levels to eliminate all forms of gendered violence.”
Given the scourge of gender-based violence in the country, which is declared a national address, the government is implementing the emergency response action plan on GBV and femicide, which was announced by President Cyril in September 2019,” read the statement on the website.
