Members of the Gauteng SAPS Water Police and Diving Services (WPDS) recovered the bodies of three drowning victims between December 12 and 15.
Heidelberg
On December 12, Ekurhuleni WPDS officers responded to a call at a cave system in the veld at the Jordaan Park.
It is alleged that three men entered the flooded former prospecting tunnel to collect “holy water”.
After about 2m, two of the men opted to return to the surface but the third ventured further.
With the assistance of community members, the tunnel was drained and the victim’s body recovered at a depth of 6m.
Tshwane
• The body of a decomposed man was recovered from the Appies River, Annlin.
• Two people were rescued from the Elandspruit, Cullinan, after their vehicle rolled into the river.
Elsburg
Ekurhuleni WPDS officers and the K9 Search and Rescue Unit responded to the Roodekop informal settlement, where residents claimed they heard screams from the nearby marsh.
Due to the dense reed growth, the SAPS helicopter was deployed to search the area. The victim’s body was aerially recovered.
