Fireworks: Boksburg SPCA pleads for responsible festivities and compassion for animals

Residents are urged to report any cases of animal cruelty, as well as stray or injured animals, to the Boksburg SPCA’s emergency number on 083 763 6311.

As New Year’s Eve approaches, the Boksburg SPCA is appealing to residents to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of their pets, warning that fireworks can cause severe distress, injury and even death to animals.

The society has once again called on the public to refrain from setting off fireworks, while urging pet owners to take proactive steps to protect their animals should fireworks occur.

Pet owners are advised to ensure all animals are properly identified.

This includes microchipping or fitting collars with up-to-date contact details. Both services are available at the Boksburg SPCA during office hours.

The SPCA further recommends that cats and dogs be brought indoors before any fireworks begin. Other animals kept outside, such as rabbits and chickens, should be secured safely in their enclosures well in advance.

Owners are encouraged to remain at home with their pets on New Year’s Eve, close windows and curtains, and play calming music to help reduce anxiety.

For animals that are particularly fearful and at risk of injuring themselves, the SPCA advises consulting a private veterinarian for appropriate calming medication.

The SPCA stresses that deliberately injuring an animal with fireworks constitutes cruelty and is a prosecutable offence under the law.
