‘Fireworks worse than last year’- Boksburg SPCA
The Boksburg SPCA raised concerns about fireworks that are easily accessible.
Despite warnings about the harm fireworks cause to animals, New Year’s Eve was another difficult time for the Boksburg SPCA.
According to manager Vicky Finnemore, the wake of this year’s celebrations was worse than last year.
“One would think that after all the warnings, the community would refrain from lighting these noises of terror. But sadly, this year, it seemed even worse. The fireworks were louder, and the aftermath was devastating for animals,” said Finnemore.
Since the start of January, the Boksburg SPCA has taken in 24 stray animals and handled multiple cases of severe injuries caused by animals fleeing from the noise.
“Many animals hurt themselves trying to escape the terrifying sounds. It’s heartbreaking,” Finnemore said, adding they are very concerned about the easy access to fireworks, which are sold freely in local streets and shopping centres.
“It’s alarming that they’re so widely available. Fireworks cause harm to animals and people, yet there’s little regulation.”
Although local WhatsApp groups circulate numbers to report illegal fireworks, Finnemore says the reporting system is flawed.
“People can’t get through and no one responds. It’s frustrating. As long as fireworks remain available, SPCA shelters like Boksburg’s will continue to deal with the aftermath of injured and stray animals.”
