Retail boost for Boksburg as Walmart opens third SA store [VIDEO]
“A key part of our journey is creating more jobs for South Africans."
Shoppers in Boksburg can now enjoy a brand-new retail experience following the official opening of Walmart’s third South African store on February 28 at Eastpoint Shopping Centre.
The launch forms part of the retailer’s expansion plan, which includes the rollout of 21 additional stores across the country.

The jam-packed, fun-filled grand opening at the corner of Rietfontein and North Rand roads in Jansen Park was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony, management speeches and lively entertainment from in-store performers and a choir. Dozens of eager shoppers gathered from early morning, keen to take advantage of opening specials and exclusive bargains.

The Boksburg Advertiser was on site to keep readers updated on the festivities. Impala Park residents Anita Pienaar and her son, Gunter, were the first customers in the queue. Gunter said he was eager to snap up specials on cycling equipment, while his mother looked forward to exploring the various opening deals.

Meanwhile, Sian Shah Reddy of Bedfordview became the first customer to pay at the tills. “I was looking forward to spending time with my dad exploring all the different products from America,” she said.

The Boksburg branch follows the successful launches of stores in Clearwater and Fourways, bringing the total number of Walmart-branded stores in Gauteng to three. The American retail plans to open a further 21 outlets across Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape.
Boosting the local economy
The new Boksburg store has created 80 jobs and strengthened ties with local suppliers.
As part of the celebrations, Walmart donated more than 1.5 tonnes of non-perishable groceries to FoodForward SA to support food security initiatives among families in the greater Ekurhuleni community.
Walmart Boksburg store manager Hector Msane expressed his enthusiasm about the strong turnout on opening day.

“I’m very excited. What excites me most is the overwhelming support from customers here in Boksburg,” he said. “Being the third Walmart store in South Africa represents growth and opportunity – especially job opportunities for people who have never worked in retail before.
“At Walmart, we listen carefully to our customers’ requests. Many of the appliances and products available in-store are here because customers asked for them. We encourage shoppers to continue sharing their requests, and we will listen and respond. Thank you for trusting us to serve you so that you can save money and live better.”
More job opportunities
Massmart CEO Miles van Rensburg also reflected on the successful launch.
“We’re grateful to see so many families joining us to celebrate this opening,” said van Rensburg. He added that the expansion drive is far from over.

“We are planning to open more than 20 stores across additional provinces in South Africa. For many of our associates here today, this is their first job – and we know employment opportunities are not easy to come by.
“A key part of our journey is creating more jobs for South Africans. As we prepare for this growth, we are promoting from within. Several associates who helped build our previous stores have proven themselves as strong leaders, and five have already been appointed to manage upcoming stores.”
With ambitious growth plans and a focus on affordability, Walmart’s arrival in Boksburg signals both economic opportunity and increased retail choice for local shoppers.
