Morning ambush leaves taxi driver dead, passengers injured in Boksburg

The driver was found in the driver’s seat with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body.

Hardly a month after three people were killed in a Daveyton incident believed to be linked to taxi violence, another deadly shooting, also suspected to be taxi-related, was reported in Boksburg on May 4.

According to Dawn Park police, the incident occurred just before 07:00 on Monday at the corner of Lama Street and Barry Marais Road in Villa Liza.

“Officers responded to reports of a shooting in progress, and upon arrival, officers found a white minibus taxi with its sliding door open. The driver, an African male, was found in the driver’s seat with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. Paramedics arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene,” said Dawn Park SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Nkemeleng Mabula.

Three male passengers in the taxi sustained minor injuries from shattered glass and were transported to Tambo Memorial Hospital for treatment.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the taxi driver had picked up three unknown males who were hitchhiking. When the taxi stopped, a sedan approached slowly, and multiple shots were fired at the vehicle before the suspects fled the scene,” added Mabula.

A case of murder and three counts of attempted murder were registered at Dawn Park SAPS.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and no arrests have been made at this stage. Investigations are ongoing.

In the previous incident in Daveyton, a taxi was reportedly ambushed by gunmen who opened fire on it shortly after 06:00 on April 21.
The vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a ditch near the Laris Street bridge crossing over the N12.

Three occupants were killed at the scene, while eight others sustained moderate injuries.
