WATCH: SALGA joint sitting focuses on strengthening local government in Germiston
Municipal leaders from across South Africa have gathered in Germiston on July 1 for the SALGA joint sitting to discuss governance, service delivery and preparations for the 2026 local government transition.
The City of Ekurhuleni is hosting the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) joint sitting of the council of mayors and speakers at the new council chambers in the OR Tambo Government Precinct.
The annual two-day gathering has brought together mayors and speakers from municipalities across South Africa to deliberate on key issues shaping the future of local government.
SALGA president Bheke Stofile said this year’s discussions are centred on the 2026 local government transition, the review of the White Paper on Local Government, and litigation affecting municipalities.

The meeting, from July 1 to 2, provides an important platform for local government leaders to strengthen governance, exchange best practice, and develop strategies aimed at building responsive, accountable and sustainable municipalities.
As discussions continue, leaders remain focused on improving service delivery and ensuring municipalities are better equipped to meet the evolving needs of communities across the country.
