Local and international volunteers deliver winter relief in Delmore

Recipients received 10kg of rice plus sugar, beans, salt and mabele.

Tzu Chi Foundation South Africa and its partners distributed food parcels to nearly 600 households in Delmore informal settlement on June 25.

Volunteers spent weeks conducting house visits to identify those in need of food support, prioritising the elderly and disabled beneficiaries.

The event opened with traditional songs and a ‘One Family’ performance, followed by speeches from Tzu Chi’s Yu Xiangguang, city social workers and community leaders, who thanked Tzu Chi for its long-standing support.

A group prayer asked for community harmony and safety.

Recipients received 10 kg of rice plus sugar, beans, salt and mabele. Beneficiary lists were referred by the Department of Social Development and the City of Ekurhuleni, prioritising elders, orphans, vulnerable people and those on medication.

Of 600 registered households across six large and six small villages, 590 collected aid.

The event was coordinated by community leaders, CPF patrollers, Ward 21’s Local Drug Action Committee, COGTA’s Community Development Worker programme and development worker Nokulunga Mhlahlo, who helped extend Tzu Chi’s work from Makausi/Primrose to Jerusalema/Delmore three years ago.

“I’m extremely thankful for the love received from Tzu Chi,” said Nokulunga. Residents echoed this gratitude: “I appreciate the little that I’ve received; it’s nice to have food on the table.”
Organisers highlighted Tzu Chi’s ‘bamboo bank’ principle, encouraging small donations to build compassion.
