The Reiger Park murder case took a new turn on August 8 with the first court appearance of a fourth accused and the State revealing new details about the alleged gang conflict it says preceded the deadly shootings.

The fourth accused, Mcfoolen Ford (26), was arrested at the weekend in connection with the murders of two women and was allegedly found in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.

He made a brief appearance in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court and the matter was postponed to September 21 to allow the defence to consult with him.

This development came as Regan Collis (23), Jamal Meyer (24) and Alvino Crawford (27) continued their bail proceedings on the same day over the August 7 shooting that claimed the lives of two women and two Anti-Gang Unit officers.

State reveals alleged gang retaliation
While opposing bail, the State told the court that the August 7 killings allegedly followed an earlier attempt on the life of a rival gang member, which apparently triggered a retaliatory attack.

The prosecution said the violence ultimately resulted in the deaths of Jaydin Magerman (27), Roleen Lessing (31), Constable Thapelo Tlomatsane (29) and Constable Sphiwe Sibeko (28).

The State argued that the alleged gang conflict posed a wider threat to the Reiger Park community, with ordinary residents caught in the crossfire.
It also warned that releasing the accused trio could expose them to retaliation from rival gangs.

Defence challenges State evidence
During the bail battle, defence attorney Samkele Kuzani argued that the State’s case against the three accused was weak.
Three CCTV clips were played in court, which the defence said supported the accused’s alibis and showed Collis at home with friends around the time of the shooting.

Kuzani challenged the alleged confession and pointing-out by Collis, claiming he had been tortured by police and forced to implicate himself and Meyer.

He also questioned the State’s reliance on common purpose, particularly in relation to Crawford, whom the State conceded was not physically at the scene when the victims were shot.

The defence further argued that no murder weapon had been recovered from any of the three accused and that no eyewitness had identified them as the shooters.

State says it has more than a confession
The State rejected the defence’s characterisation of its case as weak, saying the confession and pointing-out had been obtained through proper procedures.

State prosecutor Matthews Rampyapedi said the trial court would ultimately determine the confession’s admissibility.

The prosecution also disputed the significance of the defence CCTV footage, saying its own footage, which forensic experts in Pretoria are analysing, places Collis and Meyer at the scene and shows their alleged roles.

The State said it also has witness statements relating to the accused and the movement of the firearms stolen from the slain police officers.
It further raised concerns about witness intimidation, saying some community members had only recently started coming forward because they had previously been afraid.

The prosecution said several other matters involving Collis were being investigated, and that further arrests had not been ruled out in the latest incident, particularly those involved in the transportation and concealment of the rifles stolen from the murdered officers.

Community says it wants the violence to end
Families of previous Reiger Park shooting victims joined residents in protesting against bail and calling for an end to gang violence outside the court.

Residents have described living in fear and said they are tired of seeing shootings claim lives in the township.
The families have called for thorough investigations and justice, saying they want to see an end to what they described as a cycle of violence and fear.

The bail proceedings for Collis, Meyer and Crawford were postponed to September 23, while the fourth accused is expected back in court on September 21.
