Two Windmill Park High learners, Emmanuel Nkuna and Kgothatso Kakayo performed well in their final matric exams, achieving five distinctions each.
Nkuna attained 82% in mathematical literacy, 81% in life orientation, 96% in accounting, 89% in business studies and 85% in economics.
Kakayo scored 80% in English, 81% in mathematics, 85% in life orientation, 84% in life sciences and 82% in physical science. Nkuna said he had expected to obtain distinctions because he had focused on his schoolwork throughout his matric year.
“In the early months of matric, I wrote all the goals I wanted to accomplish. That helped me track what I had achieved and what I still had to achieve.
“Every time I wrote an exam or did my class work, I aimed for 100%.
“I would like to thank my family because they supported me and ensured that I focused on my schoolwork.
“They went as far as setting up a study room for me, and I was exempt from house chores so that I could study.”
He added that he would immediately study when he returned from school each day.
“Teachers believed in me. They always encouraged me to be the best, and it propelled me to do well. I also wanted to make them proud.
“I also avoided distractive things like watching TV, partying and social media to focus on my schoolwork,” said Nkuna. Next, I will do a teaching course to become an accounting teacher.”

Hazel Ndaba, the accounting teacher at Windmill Park High, said she was happy that Nkuna did well in the subject she had taught him.
“I was happy when he called and told me that he did well in accounting. At the beginning of the year, Emmanuel was sick and only started attending school in March, so you would expect that to dampen his spirit, but it didn’t.
“He is a dedicated learner who worked hard when he returned to school from his illness.“ I wish him all the best in his future endeavours,” said Ndaba.
Principal Thabo Mokgwatsana said their matric pass rate had increased last year.
“Our pass rate is 80,2% compared to 79,8% in 2021. In 2020, we had the lowest pass rate in history – 60.4% – so this shows that staff are doing a good job.
“Now our main aim is to obtain a 90% matric pass rate this year. If we work hard, we will achieve it,” said Mokgwatsana.
