Owls look to the future after challenging season

As the club looks ahead, the spirit of Boksburg Rugby endures, and the journey forward continues- with renewed purpose and unity.

Boksburg Rugby Club recently held its 122nd AGM, where chairperson Hendrik Harmse delivered a report reflecting on the trials and triumphs of the 2025 season.

Despite describing the past year as one defined by “survival,” Harmse expressed optimism about the club’s future as it prepares for a new chapter in 2026.
Reflecting on the season, Harmse acknowledged the immense challenges faced both on and off the field.

“2025 presented numerous and unexpected challenges. Difficult decisions were required to ensure the club’s long-term sustainability and growth,” he said.
One such decision was the strategic move from the Peregrine League to the Merlin League — a transition that, while difficult, has given the club an opportunity to regroup and rebuild.

“It’s provided an opportunity to refocus our efforts, strengthen our foundations, and rebuild team morale and structure,” said Harmse.

He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the club’s management, sponsors, players, and coaching staff.

“Your continued involvement has been instrumental in ensuring the ongoing operation of the club during a particularly challenging period. To our sponsors, your loyal support and partnership have allowed us to continue competing and representing our community.

“Your commitment to the game and to the club is a testament to the strong spirit that defines Boksburg rugby.”

Looking ahead, Harmse outlined the club’s key priorities for the 2026 season, including consolidating structures and resources, continuing player development and retention, strengthening community engagement and sponsorship relationships, and restoring the club’s standing as a respected force in local rugby.

“We conclude the 2025 season with optimism for the future. The challenges we’ve faced have only strengthened our resolve to rebuild and return to competitiveness.”

The club ended the financial year on a positive note, recording a surplus of R76 000.

The new management team for the 2026 season is as follows: Lex Thorpe (president), Hendrik Harmse (chairperson)|, Albie Cilliers (vice chairperson), Drikus Myburgh (treasurer), Maritza Botha (secretary)|, Henrico Thorpe (club captain) and committee members Braam Myburgh, Boom de Klerk, and Travis Howell.
