Parents concerned about return of dismissed teacher to Boksburg High
Concerns rise at Boksburg High School as a dismissed teacher reportedly wins appeal and is expected to return.
Parents and stakeholders at Boksburg High School are anxiously following reports that a teacher, previously dismissed for sexual misconduct, may be returning to the school.
According to information, the teacher allegedly sexually harassed five learners and a staff member last year.
The matter was escalated, and the teacher was reportedly dismissed a few months ago.
He, however, appealed his case and won, and is now reportedly being reinstated at Boksburg High School.
It was understood that the teacher had to return to the school on November 10, but thus far, he has not shown up. It remains unclear when the teacher will resume his duties.
A concerned parent said her child is extremely anxious about the teacher’s return.
“The department did not protect the identities of the children who testified against him during this process.
“He has already intimidated my daughter in class after finding out she had spoken to a teacher about the way he sexualises young female students. I understand he brought one learner chocolates and gave her compliments. During the investigation, they placed him at Windmill Park Secondary School, which now reportedly also has a case against him. The department is letting the school down,” the parent said.
Another parent has called for urgent intervention from the Department of Education.
“It’s ridiculous. I want the department to explain how it can overturn a dismissal without hearing evidence. As far as I know, none of the victims were called to testify. The matter was even escalated to the Gauteng Education MEC, Matome Chiloane.”
The concerns come shortly after another incident at the school where a Grade Nine learner was stabbed on the premises on October 23. A group of about eight boys allegedly forced their way into the school.
In a separate case, a teacher from Sunward Park High School was dismissed following serious allegations that he sexually assaulted and verbally abused female learners.
Boksburg High School principal, Enoch Thango, referred the Boksburg Advertiser to the Department of Education for comment.
Department spokesperson Steve Mabona acknowledged the Boksburg Advertiser’s enquiry and said he would attend to it.
